On a fateful Saturday afternoon, Esther Martin, a 68-year-old resident of Woodford Green, experienced a horrifying encounter at a property located in Hillman Avenue, Jaywick. The incident involved a group of prohibited dogs known as the XL bully breed, which viciously attacked her.
Shortly after receiving the distress call, a team of dedicated officers from Essex Police promptly arrived at the location, wasting no time in their response. Even with the combined efforts of six officers and the assistance of brave individuals from the public, tragically, Ms Martin, who was merely visiting her 11-year-old grandson at the time, succumbed to her injuries and unfortunately passed away at the very scene of the incident.
Residents living nearby reported hearing “disturbing” screams coming from the premises, which persisted for a duration of approximately ten minutes.
Chief Superintendent Glen Pavelin, who is a high-ranking officer at Essex Police, informed the press outside Clacton police station that there exists a “familial relationship” between the person who was harmed and the individual who has been apprehended on suspicion of engaging in dangerous dog-related activities, and this individual happens to be 39 years old.
In his statement, he expressed his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and friends. Additionally, he assured that the necessary steps were being taken to provide support to them, emphasizing the presence of specifically trained officers who were dedicated to assisting them during this difficult time.
Sonia Martin, the daughter of the victim, has revealed that the dogs involved in the incident belonged to the XL bully breed. According to Ms Martin, her mother, who had previously been employed at a Tesco store but had since retired, had been in the process of rebuilding her life after experiencing the tragic loss of another daughter two years ago.
She added: “It killed our mother and our children’s grandmother. I’m getting married in a couple of years and my mom won’t be there.”

Lucy Shaw, a 38-year-old resident residing in a residence situated adjacent to the aforementioned address, conveyed to the PA news agency that she discerned a continuous and distressing sequence of vocal outcries lasting approximately ten minutes.
According to her account, we ventured outside into the garden, where an eerie silence enveloped the surroundings. Suddenly, the tranquil atmosphere was shattered by the persistent barking of dogs, their fervent cries resonating through the air. As if that wasn’t distressing enough, our ears were then assaulted by the piercing sound of someone screaming, their desperate pleas slicing through the stillness.
The noise that echoed through the room resembled the shrill cries of a distressed child, persisting for what felt like an eternity, lasting approximately ten minutes in total.
After some time had passed, we decided to go back inside because the sound was extremely disturbing and unpleasant.
Mike Coleman, a 74-year-old resident residing just a few houses away, recounted witnessing a man traversing the road towards the specified address whilst indulging in a vehement and boisterous outburst.
According to his account, the individual in question was described as engaged in intense shouting and hallowing, so much so that his voice was excessively loud. Subsequently, he proceeded to forcefully strike at the windows, displaying evident signs of panic and distress.
Upon hearing his command to “phone the police,” I relayed the message to my wife, who immediately dialed their emergency line. However, much to our surprise, the authorities informed us that they were already engaged in a separate conversation with another individual.
After a few minutes, the police arrived on the scene, initially with two cars, but soon after three more joined them, and eventually they took measures to completely block off the road.
I was able to perceive the sound of the shots as they wreaked havoc, and in that moment, it signified the end.
Julie Coleman, aged 67, recounted the distressing incident as she recalled how she hurriedly descended to the scene to ascertain the cause of the commotion. Her husband, who had already arrived at the scene, alerted her to the alarming presence of a vulnerable lady within their property, who was being mercilessly assaulted by a pair of ferocious canines.
He mentioned that he had received a phone call instructing him to visit and assess the well-being of a particular woman.
He was experiencing a high level of stress, agitation, and verbal expression, along with a significant amount of concern.
As he screamed loudly and cried out, “Those bullies are extra large!”, I found myself in a state of confusion as I couldn’t determine the specific breed they belonged to.
